Priming studies suggest that decisions can be influenced by apparently irrelevant actions or events that took place just before the cusp of choice. Dr Kahneman and a growing number of his colleagues fear that a lot of this priming research is poorly founded. Over the past few years various researchers have made systematic attempts to replicate some of the more widely cited priming experiments.
Many of these replications have failed. In April, for instance, a paper in PLoS ONE , a journal, reported that nine separate experiments had not managed to reproduce the results of a famous study from purporting to show that thinking about a professor before taking an intelligence test leads to a higher score than imagining a football hooligan. If a systematic campaign of replication does not lead to the same results, then either the original research is flawed as the replicators claim or the replications are as many of the original researchers on priming contend.
Either way, something is awry. It is tempting to see the priming fracas as an isolated case in an area of science—psychology—easily marginalised as soft and wayward. But irreproducibility is much more widespread. A few years ago scientists at Amgen, an American drug company, tried to replicate 53 studies that they considered landmarks in the basic science of cancer, often co-operating closely with the original researchers to ensure that their experimental technique matched the one used first time round.
According to a piece they wrote last year in Nature , a leading scientific journal, they were able to reproduce the original results in just six. Months earlier Florian Prinz and his colleagues at Bayer HealthCare, a German pharmaceutical giant, reported in Nature Reviews Drug Discovery , a sister journal, that they had successfully reproduced the published results in just a quarter of 67 seminal studies.

The term “platform” is on everyone’s lips. Startups that hope for high financing rates are using it to promote their business idea – a successful platform promises power, influence and high profits. But what characterizes platforms and their business model? With the following information we will give you an overview. We encounter the term “platform” far more often in everyday language than we realize: “We have offered him a platform to spread his ideas”, “There is a platform from which we can see the valley”, “Renault and Nissan use the same platform for their cars” or “Your train is arriving on platform 7”.
In all these examples, platforms play a passive role – as arrival points, viewpoints or forums. But what connects them is the enabling element. Without them, the speaker could not promote his ideas, the car could not be built, or the train could not receive guests. A platform thus aims to bring supply and demand together, to “match” them. The mentioned applications of the term originate from our analog everyday life – deliberately not from the digital economy, which certainly evokes the strongest associations with the term in today’s economic environment.
When we talk about platforms here, we are mostly talking about large multinational companies such as Uber, Airbnb or Instagram.

Creator of the controversial new Netflix reality show Indian Matchmaking , Smriti Mundhra, has reacted to the criticism that the show has received. In the show, Preeti appears to be more concerned with finding a match for her year-old son than the son himself. Progressing beyond conservative ideals is a sign of bravery, but also privilege. While some have called the show out for its depiction of regressive ideas about beauty and compatibility, others have consumed it as a piece of light entertainment.
And plenty of participants in the series defy or refuse to conform to these standards, which I think is a powerful statement about how young people in India and the diaspora are changing in terms of what we should value when it comes to marriage. In the show, Sima Taparia goes about setting up her clients with potential partners. Her methods are what have drawn the most attention. I hope the conversations started by the show will help to propel that change. She said that the popularity of the show has opened up the possibility of having a more diverse set of participants in a second season, were there to be one.

Shippers, like love-scorned romantics, are willing to try almost anything to find a bigger pool of suitors and more capacity. Carriers, by contrast, are continually looking for ways to get the most out of their freight dates while avoiding costly deadhead rendezvous. Online ‘freight dating‘ addresses both concerns. But finding the perfect match requires time and proper due diligence. Even then, a certain amount of intangible chemistry, and even luck, can make or break a successful partnership.

The show, which has generated a lot of buzz online, follows Sima Taparia, a high-profile matchmaker from Mumbai who sets couples up with prospective matches. While the show has triggered a debate on sexism, colourism and racism, it has managed to throw the spotlight on the age-old Indian custom of arranged marriage. Over the last two decades, several Bollywood films and reality TV shows have explored the concept of arranged marriages in their own way and have done justice to the theme.
The show is about the central figure, Aneela Rahman, a Glasgow based British-Asian marriage arranger, who gets her family and friends to network together and find the perfect partner for the contestants in a four-week period. The episodes end with updates on how the matches are or not getting on. The show lasted only one season and had five episodes. Dimpy from Kolkata went on to win the show and married Mahajan in a televised ceremony.
The two, however, split next year and filed for divorce soon after. Are arranged marriages doomed from the start and bound to end in divorce? Or is there some hope for the age-old marriage union that can make modern romance work? The couples are from different backgrounds, with highly opinionated family members and the cameras follow them as they navigate the rocky road starting from their wedding day to the married bliss.
